2016: A Year in Black Excellence

Despite the bullshit, we have prospered.

Personally, I feel like Issa Rae is my BFF. Ever since I found ABG my freshman year in college, its very clear to me that we are kindred spirits. I hope one day that our relationship will flourish into more than the one-sided, social media stalker status that I’m currently maintaining right now, but until that day, I’ll just stan for her from way over here. My girl is nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Globes for her show Insecure and I could not be more proud!

As soon as I saw Lady Ava’s name, I knew Queen Sugar was going to give me all my life, and that it was. Honestly, Ava DuVernay has been my person to watch since Middle of Nowhere. And as if Queen Sugar weren’t enough, she dropped another bomb with 13th, and reminded us all that it’s levels to this “woke” shit.

I’ve got a new-found respect for Donald Glover. Not only was Atlanta the shit and deserving of all the awards, Awaken, My Love has been on repeat since it dropped.

Grammy noms are out, as well, and niggas reign supreme. Solange, Lil Chano from 79th, Queen Bey, RiRi, and even that nigga Frank came through to bless the music libraries of all those ready and willing to receive. And, even if you wasn’t ready, well… too bad, your edges will not be returned. (Honorable mentions: Schoolboy Q, Mac Miller, and Drake (We all know that album was trash, but the man was still topping charts and clocking those dollars.)

And of course, shout out to the dedicated foot soldiers of the Black Lives Matter movement. Deray, Netta, Jamilah, Amber, Jesse and everyone else who takes it upon themselves to put these white folks on notice with style and grace – I see you, and I thank you.

I hope you got your popcorn ready for this awards season ’cause we outchea.
